Answers to many of our greatest wellness challenges are found in the community. Our communities hold the knowledge about the changes to be made and the pathways to take us forward.
IDEA: What if ‘nature’ was also granted ‘personhood’ – the right to equal protection under the law –in the U.S. as with the Whanganui River in New Zealand? [link to project page]
Local Māori fought to obtain legal protections for the Whanganui River since 1873, giving rise to “one of New Zealand’s longest running court cases.” On March 15, 2017, the New Zealand parliament voted to grant the Whanganui River personhood. Recognition of Indigenous rights and the rights of nature in this monumental act by Māori and the New Zealand government, represents a move towards sustainable practices that can reduce humanity’s impact on the environment. IDEA: What if there was a public health institute to focus solely on indigenous health and wellness?
A desire to create greater connectivity across the many tribes, communities and organizations dedicated to the health and wellness of American Indian and Alaska Native people led to the creation of Seven Directions, A Center for Indigenous Public Health. Seven Directions is the first national public health institute in the U.S. to focus solely on Indigenous health and wellbeing.
Red Star International, Inc. led an exploration that began in 2011 to determine the value and desirability of an Indigenous focused public health institute. Guided by a national advisory board, the process included strong Tribal engagement and outreach, coupled with a public health systems analysis and financial review resulting in:
- A national public health systems needs and assets assessment [link to pdf]
- A public health agenda [link to pdf] to improve wellness that can be used by all system stakeholders.
- A Unified Approach to Public Health: A Case For Tribal Public Health Institutes. [link to pdf]

Development of Seven Directions was achieved with support from grants from the Robert Wood Johnson and W.K. Kellogg Foundations.
